Increase CPP Death Benefit

CPP Death Benefit Resources

Canadians who have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) during their lifetime are currently eligible for a lump sum of $2,500 through the CPP Death Benefit. This $2,500 amount is woefully inadequate and has remained stagnant since 1998. No matter the individuals’ income, the need for end-of-life requirements touches every single Canadian.

Our multi-cultural and diverse society necessitates appropriate and dignified care for every Canadian as they age and are faced with end-of-life requirements.  That’s why FSAC recommends that the Government of Canada restore the CPP Death Benefit to its original level of $3,580 and tie it to inflation to prevent it from falling behind again as impacted by inflation.

FSAC is advocating for a change to Canada’s Excise Tax Act to exempt funeral services from GST, reducing the financial burden on grieving families. This amendment would zero-rate essential deathcare goods and services, saving families an estimated $1,000 annually.

Obituary scraping is the unauthorized copying of obituaries by third-party websites for profit. Since 2014, companies have duplicated obituaries without permission, profiting from ads and memorial sales.

This practice, often called “obituary piracy,” misleads families and the public, and damages the integrity of the deathcare sector by creating unauthorized tributes that seem affiliated with funeral homes. FSAC is currently working on a strategy to protect grieving families from further pain caused by obituary scraping.

One of the greatest benefits of being a FSAC member is the opportunity to network and meet up and share stories with colleagues from across the country.

I wouldn’t have that same opportunity if I wasn’t a FSAC member.

Partnering with Provincial Associations Across Canada

FSAC collaborates with provincial deathcare associations to strengthen our collective voice and foster unity across the profession.

These partnerships ensure we address regional and national priorities together, creating a stronger, more connected profession from coast to coast.
